On 22 Feb 2017, NASA announced that it had discovered 7 new exoplanets orbiting around a single star 40 light years away from earth which is very close in cosmic terms.
Almost all are made up of rocks but only 3 out of 7 exoplanets are in habitable zone which means that they are not too far or too close to the sun and are enough hot that it may contain the liquid fluid which is most important for the existence of life.
1 of them may be ice world. It’s a first time that so many exoplanets have been found orbiting around a single star outside our solar system. All planets are considered to be rock planets are sizes are similar to the earth.
- Out of 7 Planets 3 lie in that zone which can support life.
- Planets have Rocky Surface.
- Studies Continued if their is water present.
- Researches continued to find out water in the surfaces of these planets.
The 7 Exoplanets system is called TRAPPIST-1
The earth like planets which recently discovered are part of TRAPPIST-1 system. The first 3 planets are discovered in May 2016. The number of planets increased to 7 when the spitzer Telescope found and confirmed more exoplanets.
The Ultra – cool Dwarf Star.
The Trappist -1 star is also known as Ultra-cool dwarf star. It’s so cold out their that liquid water can survive on the exoplanets orbiting. The planets are so close to each other, in fact, if any person standing on the surface of any one planet, it has potential to see clouds or may be surface of other planet.
Either always Night or always Day
These exoplanets are only one side faces the light. This means that each side of all 7 planets either always has day or always has night. Researches will continue to detect water, oxygen and other components of a planets atmosphere.
How to find Exoplanets
The easiest way to find exoplanets is by looking at the star continuously and analyzing any change in lights coming from it, if any exoplanet crosses between then a small dip in light will be seen. The Star is smaller and two thousand times dim from Sun, the temperature of star is much colder and that’s a reason there can be a water on the surface of the exoplanets.
